The main goal of the project is to contribute to improved availability of safe food in domestic markets thus improving food and nutrition security, and enhancing the position of Bangladesh in regional and international food trade. To achieve this, the project is working with the government of Bangladesh counterpart, Ministry of Food (MoF) in the process of institutionalizing food safety. It is envisaged that this will be achieved by improving the integration of the national food safety control system and by enhancing inter-agency collaboration and cooperation. This is expected to lead to greater consistency in enforcement of regulations and a safer food supply.

The project is focused on providing technical support necessary to the Ministry of Food to establish the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) and to strengthen inter-ministerial and inter-agency collaboration. The BFSA, under the Food Safety Act 2013, is tasked with coordinating official food controls across the food chain; working in collaboration with government agencies currently responsible for food inspection; setting evidence-based food standards; and providing scientific and technical advice to underpin food safety policy.

The main outputs of the project are as follows:

  • Output 1 : Support to strengthen inter-ministerial and inter-agency collaboration and coordination in the field of food safety control to prepare the way for operationalizing the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA)
  • Output 2 : Effective integrated approaches to food safety in all primary sources of production (fish, animal and crop);
  • Output 1 : Enabling environment for improved third party verification/inspection and certification to national food control.
